An Environmental Survey Held an Archaeological Surprise
Auld-Thomas, then a doctoral student at Tulane University, came across an existing LiDAR dataset covering part of Campeche in southeastern Mexico. Crucially, the survey had not originally been commissioned to hunt for ancient cities; it had been collected for environmental purposes. Instead of organising a costly new aerial survey, Auld-Thomas and his colleagues realised they could analyse this previously collected information for archaeological features.LiDAR short for Light Detection and Ranging uses laser pulses to map the ground with remarkable detail. Researchers can process the resulting data to see features that are difficult to recognise beneath thick vegetation.
Beneath the Trees Was an Ancient City
What emerged from the data was far bigger than an isolated ruin. In one 16.6-square-kilometre survey block, researchers identified the centre of a major urban settlement previously unknown to the scientific community. They named it Valeriana, after a nearby freshwater lagoon. The city contained two major centres of monumental architecture about two kilometres apart, surrounded and connected by dense settlement and extensive modifications to the landscape.Its larger monumental precinct had features associated with an important Classic Maya political centre: enclosed plazas, temple pyramids, a broad causeway, a ballcourt and a reservoir created by damming a seasonal watercourse. Researchers also identified a probable E-Group architectural complex, which could point to an early foundation for the settlement.
More Than 6,600 Structures Emerged From the Data
Valeriana was only part of the surprise. Across three survey blocks covering roughly 122 square kilometres, the researchers identified 6,674 structures. Their analysis revealed not only major urbanism but also dense settlement and agricultural infrastructure across parts of the landscape that had received relatively little archaeological attention.The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Antiquity in October 2024 by Auld-Thomas, Marcello Canuto and their colleagues. The research also adds to a dramatic shift in Maya archaeology. Earlier LiDAR projects have uncovered extensive settlements hidden beneath tropical forests, including research in Guatemala that identified more than 60,000 structures, from individual homes to palaces, ceremonial centres and pyramids.
What Else Could Be Hiding in Old Data?
Perhaps the most fascinating part of Valeriana's discovery is that the information needed to find it already existed. The researchers did not initially need to fly over the forest or begin a huge excavation; they looked at an environmental dataset with a different question in mind. That makes Valeriana more than another lost-city story. It suggests that valuable archaeological clues may already be sitting inside datasets collected for entirely different purposes. Centuries after forests grew over this Maya settlement, lasers exposed its outline.
