98-Year-old Iowa man finally receives high school diploma 80 years after leaving school. You'll be shocked to know why!

For more than eight decades, Paul Little carried a story that began with a school he never got to graduate from. At 98, the Iowa man finally received the diploma he would have earned in 1946 but the surprise came with an unexpected twist: by the time his former school honoured him, Little had already spent years helping other students achieve their own educational dreams.

Paul Little Left School To Support His Family

Little attended Dallas Centre High School in Grimes, Iowa, but his education was cut short during his junior year. He left school so he could work and help support his family. He eventually became a farmer and spent years working near Panora, Iowa. Although he never returned to complete high school, education remained important to him and his late wife, Eleanor.

According to KCCI, the couple spent years supporting students at Panorama High School. Kasey Huebner, superintendent of Panorama Community Schools, said Little had been giving money to help students move forward for roughly 15 to 18 years. “For the last 15-18 years he's given money out to help our kids get jump-started to the next stage in life,” Huebner told KCCI. More than 150 students benefited from that support, with the family keeping track of the recipients in what they called Paul’s “Hall of Fame.”

A Surprise Diploma At 98

Little’s connection with his old school came full circle after he moved back to Dallas Centre and entered a nursing home. On September 17, officials from the Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District arrived at the nursing home with a surprise. Little was presented with an honorary high school diploma from the Class of 1946, the graduating class he should have been part of 80 years earlier. The school district described the ceremony as a way of recognising Little’s long connection with the community and his support for students.

“I’m excited to play just a little role in recognising the awesomeness that is a guy like Paul in our community,” Dallas Center-Grimes superintendent Scott Blum said, according to KCCI. The district also noted that Little donated $50,000 to the Dallas Center-Grimes Education Foundation after returning to the community. His contribution now helps provide scholarships to graduating seniors.

He Never Stopped Believing In Education

Despite leaving high school as a teenager, Little has continued to see education as an important investment in young people's futures. “I think it’s very important. We need to support the kids in schools,” Little told KCCI. The school district said his financial support has already helped generations of students, making his honorary diploma more than a simple recognition of an unfinished chapter. Little himself appeared to sum up the moment simply. Speaking about finally receiving the diploma after so many years, he said, “It’s nice to know that after I don’t know how many years, I finally graduated.”
