A 72-year-old woman in Pennsylvania was facing the possibility of losing the safety of her century-old home when structural damage threatened to bring part of it down. Maureen Bird, who lives in Historic Midway in Washington County, could not afford the extensive repairs required on her limited income. A cracked basement wall had turned her house into a safety concern, leaving her worried about its stability during storms. While she worried if her house would survive the next storm, an aid through US government helped her remain inside her safe haven, while her problems were taken care of. But how?

Help arrived through a US government housing assistance programme that funded essential repairs and helped her remain in her home.

How a USDA grant helped repair Maureen Bird’s home

As per information published by USDA Rural Development, Maureen's almost century-old house had a cracked basement wall, which posed a serious risk. With very limited income, she could not afford to get the renovation done. Therefore, she applied to the USDA's Single Family Housing Section 504 Home Repair programme. It offerd her financial assistance when she needed it. She received a grant and a low-interest loan that fit her budget and helped her get her home repaired.

Local contractors helped restore the basement wall and made the property safe to live. As per the information on the official website of USDA, Bird expressed her gratitude for the assistance, saying the programme had helped her immensely by saving her home and giving her a safe place to stay.

What is the USDA Section 504 Home Repair programme?

USDA Rural Development oversees the Section 504 Home Repair programme. It offers loans to those homeowners who fall under low and very low income bracket. The programme allows the homeowners to make repairs or upgrade their home. It further provides grant to senior homeowners as well, who are eligible.

The programme helps people keep their house, while making sure they are able to get the repairs done that can make their living conditions unsafe. The loans granted can also be used for home improvements, modernisation, general repairs and removal of any health and safety hazards.

How the programme supports local communities

USDA Rural Development says helping homeowners maintain safe and habitable properties benefits not only individual families but also the wider community. Keeping people in their homes can help them build savings over time while supporting local businesses involved in construction and home repairs.

In Bird’s case, the project also provided work for local contractors, demonstrating how housing assistance can help address urgent repair needs while contributing to the local economy.
