70MAI DASH CAM PRO review: A great investment with performance that beats others in the market

The built-in battery offers recording even when the car is switched off — to protect against theft.

If you’re on the road a lot, it makes sense to get a dash cam for your car. It just melts away into the background, quietly doing its work, storing away snippets of video that can be called upon if needed.

In case you haven’t heard if it, 70mai is a Xiaomi ecosystem company that specialises in car dash cameras. Their innovation is a modular dash cam that includes a separate GPS module (it’s optional, enables extra features. A 4G + GPS module will be coming later.

The camera itself records video in 2592 x 1944 pixels. That’s a sufficiently high resolution and quality to be able to see number plates of the vehicles around you — exactly what you need in a dash cam. The 140 degree field of view lens takes in the entire road ahead. We found that the Sony IMX335 sensor and wide aperture makes short work of night videos too. The real quality of a dash cam can be judged by how it records videos at night — without lens flares from bright lights and still allowing you to read license plates. This passes with flying colours in our opinion.

The optional GPS module enables ADAS — the Advanced Driver Assistant System. ADAS warns you about proper distance from car in front and has a lane departure warning. It can be useful in some situations (like a highway) but we found it best turned off within the city because the repeated warnings can get a bit much.

Installation is pretty straightforward. The box includes a 12V adaptor, long cable, compact windscreen mount and a tool to help hide the cable in the car’s trim pieces. If you get the app, you can connect to the camera over WiFi and see live video on your phone plus transfer and share video clips. Finally, the built-in battery offers recording even when the car is switched off — to protect against theft when you’re away. It gets triggered and starts recording with movement. At the price, we think this is a great investment with performance that beats many others in the market.
