Financial independence is increasingly becoming a necessity for women who want greater control over their lives, choices and future. Having financial security can provide a crucial safety net, reduce dependence on others and offer the confidence to navigate unexpected situations without compromising on personal goals. Whether it is planning for the future, handling emergencies, or building long-term stability, being financially prepared can make a meaningful difference. In a recent Instagram post, Bengaluru CA Meenal Goel highlighted 6 important investments that every woman should consider to strengthen her financial foundation and work towards a more secure future. Here’s what she recommends.

Emergency Fund

Goel recommends maintaining an emergency reserve covering around six months of essential expenses and keeping it easily accessible. She also suggests having an amount equivalent to six months of salary in a bank account that only the woman operates. This personal reserve can provide financial independence during unexpected situations.

PPF

The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed, long-term savings option that offers tax benefits and relatively high, safe returns. An account can be opened with just Rs 500, making it accessible for new investors. The accumulated corpus can support major financial goals, including retirement, marriage and starting a family.

Sukanya Samriddhi

The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana can help parents build savings for their daughter’s future. Goel highlights its 8.2 per cent return, described as the highest government-offered rate, and its minimum opening deposit of Rs 250. Over its 21-year maturity period, the accumulated savings can help fund college education and wedding expenses.

Life + Accident Cover

Goel recommends affordable government-backed protection through PMJJBY and PMSBY. For an annual premium of Rs 456, these schemes provide Rs 2 lakh in life cover and Rs 2 lakh in accident cover. Another advantage is that applicants do not need to undergo a medical examination, making basic financial protection easier to access.

Know Your Legal Rights

Goel emphasises that financial independence also requires awareness of legal protections. Women should understand the rights available to them in different situations. For instance, she notes that a police officer cannot take a woman away between sunset and sunrise without written permission from a magistrate, highlighting the importance of knowing one’s legal safeguards.

Invest in Your Own Name

Goel advises women to build savings, investments and assets that are held in their own names. Having something personally owned and controlled can strengthen financial independence and provide greater security. Whether it is an investment, savings account or asset, every woman should have financial resources she can independently access and manage.

In conclusion, Meenal Goel noted that financial independence is about more than earning an income. It means having personal assets, an emergency fund and adequate financial and legal protection. The aim is to ensure every woman has resources and safeguards she controls, so her future does not depend entirely on someone else.
