There is something special about watching a great movie and then discovering it began as an equally fascinating book. Malayalam cinema has a rich history of turning novels into beautiful films, bringing the characters and stories from the page to the screen. From prison romances and murder mysteries to survival dramas and timeless love stories, these adaptations have given audiences the best of both worlds. If you're a book lover looking for your next read or a movie buff searching for a weekend watchlist, here are six Malayalam films inspired by acclaimed books and where you can stream them online.

Take a look at Malayalam movies based on books

Mathilukal
One of Malayalam cinema's most popular literary adaptations, Mathilukal is based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by legendary writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. Published in 1965, the book draws from Basheer's own experiences as a political prisoner in a Trivandrum jail during India's freedom struggle.

The story follows Basheer's unexpected romance with Narayani, a woman imprisoned on the other side of a prison wall. Despite never seeing each other, the two develop a deep emotional bond through conversations across the wall.

Directed, written, and produced by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, the 1990 film stars Mammootty as Basheer and is widely regarded as one of the finest literary adaptations in Malayalam cinema. Those interested can buy the novel through Amazon or DC Books. The movie is available to stream for free on YouTube with English subtitles.

Ponman
One of the newest additions to the list, Ponman is adapted from G.R. Indugopan's novel Naalaanchu Cheruppakar. Interestingly, Indugopan also co-wrote the screenplay along with Justin Mathew, ensuring much of the novel's essence remained intact.

The film stars Basil Joseph in the lead role as P.P. Ajesh, a man whose business involves lending gold jewellery for weddings. His life takes an unexpected turn when jewellery given for a wedding is not returned as promised after the ceremony. Apart from Basil Joseph, the cast includes Sajin Gopu, Lijomol Jose, Anand Manmadhan, and Deepak Parambol. The film is currently streaming on JioHotstar.

Thoovanathumbikal
Few Malayalam films enjoy cult status quite like Thoovanathumbikal. The 1987 classic is partly inspired by Udakappola, a novel written by filmmaker and author P. Padmarajan.

Starring Mohanlal, Sumalatha, and Parvathy, the film explores the complicated emotional journey of Jayakrishnan and the two women who play significant roles in his life. Even decades after its release, Sumalatha's portrayal of Clara remains one of Malayalam cinema's most iconic characters.

The film's music, visual style, and emotional storytelling continue to attract new generations of viewers. For those curious about Padmarajan's literary roots, reading Udakappola alongside the film offers an interesting comparison. Thoovanathumbikal is available to stream on JioHotstar.

Chemmeen
When discussions turn to classic Malayalam novels, Chemmeen is almost always part of the conversation. Written by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai and published in 1956, the novel became a landmark achievement in Indian literature.

Set in a coastal fishing community, the story combines romance, tradition, faith, and tragedy. Over the years, the novel has been translated into more than 30 Indian and foreign languages, cementing its place as one of Malayalam literature's most influential works.

Its film adaptation, released in 1965, remains equally celebrated. More than half a century later, both the book and the movie continue to be studied and admired for their storytelling and cultural significance. The novel remains a must-read for anyone exploring Malayalam literature. Available to stream on Prime Video.

Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha
Mystery lovers should add Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha to their reading and watch list. The film is based on the novel by writer T.P. Rajeevan and was adapted for the screen by filmmaker Ranjith.

The story follows Haridas, who returns to his native village of Paleri to investigate a murder that occurred more than fifty years earlier. As he digs deeper into the case, long-buried secrets begin to emerge.

The film is particularly notable for Mammootty's performance in three different roles. Mythili and Shweta Menon also play important parts in the gripping mystery drama. Viewers can stream the film on Sun NXT.

Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life)
Few modern Malayalam novels have achieved the popularity of Benyamin's Aadujeevitham. Published in 2008, the bestselling survival novel is based on the real-life experiences of Najeeb Muhammad.

The story follows Najeeb, who leaves Kerala hoping for a better future in the Gulf. Instead, he finds himself trapped in brutal conditions and forced into a life of isolation as a goatherd in the Saudi desert. The novel's emotional depth and realistic portrayal of suffering made it one of the most discussed Malayalam books of recent decades.

Director Blessy brought the story to the big screen with Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life), starring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role. The actor underwent a dramatic physical transformation to portray Najeeb's hardships, and the film earned praise for its powerful storytelling and emotional impact.

Whether you've already read Benyamin's novel or are discovering the story for the first time, Aadujeevitham remains one of the most compelling book-to-film adaptations Malayalam cinema has produced. Streaming on Netflix.
