4 Indian women pilots fly into history with 17-hr haul, Anand Mahindra awed by their endurance

On Saturday, an all-woman Air India cockpit crew flew from San Francisco to Bengaluru, which is on the opposite end of the globe, creating a new record in the Indian aviation history

Air India's inaugural San Francisco-Bengaluru flight went over the North Pole, taking the Atlantic route, to reach the Karnataka capital at the other end of the world. The aviation company said that it was the longest commercial flight in the world to be operated by Air India or any other airline in India.

Sharing a Times Of India video, Anand Mahindra took to Twitter to laud the all-women cockpit crew in a special way.


The Mahindra Group boss said that he plans to tell his three-year-old grandson, who loves planes, about the crew - Capt Zoya Aggarwal, Capt Papagari Thanmai, Capt Akansha Sonaware and Capt Shivani Manhas.

Mentioning an important lesson for the future generations, the 65-year-old auto boss said that he wants his grandson to know that women are as much capable of stamina, endurance and fearlessness as men.


Flight AI176 departed from San Francisco in the USA at 8.30 pm (IST) on Saturday and landed at the Kempegowda International Airport at 3.45 am (IST) on Monday.

The direct distance between the two cities at opposite ends of the world is 13,993 km with a time zone change of around 13.5 hours. "The total flight time on this route will be of more than 17 hours depending on the wind speed on that particular day," Air India said in a statement.

The flight operated with a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft VT ALG with a seating capacity of 238 seats including 8 First Class, 35 Business Class,195 Economy class configuration besides four cockpit and 12 cabin crew. "Captain Zoya Aggarwal is an accomplished pilot with a flying experience of more than 8000 hours and command experience in a B-777 aircraft of more than 10 years and more than 2500 flying hours," the national carrier's statement said.

The Union Aviation minister Hardip Singh Puri had also lauded their tenacity.
