Veronica Mars, the American TV series created by screenwriter Rob Thomas and starring Kirsten Bell, was cancelled in 2007 after a successful run. Thomas wrote a script for a feature-length film, but Warner Bros. decided not to fund the project. In March 2013, Bell and Thomas launched a Kickstarter campaign for the film, and within 10 hours, they reached their $2 million funding goal.
