That 2020 has been a challenging year which tested the patience, grit and determination of the global population is a known fact.

The year, however, did have a silver lining - food. From experimenting with banana bread, to whipping up delicious Dalgona coffee - from homemade pani puris to spicy Chole Bhature, Indians took time off from their WFH woes, donned their cooking hats and aprons and cooked up a storm in their kitchens during lockdown.

Dalgona coffee recipe was the top trending dish on the search engine, closely followed by jalebi recipe and pizza recipe.

Unprecedented times? Not for Biryani!
The verdict is out and India has spoken. The most ordered dish of 2020 is…*cue drumroll*...Biryani (surprise, surprise!).

Swiggy’s StatEATistics reveal that Indians ordered more than one Biryani per second this year. The mighty chicken Biryani has reaffirmed its place as India’s favourite dish. Over 3 lakh users made their Swiggy debut with a chicken Biryani.

Sadly, its veg counterpart did not have the same luck. For every veg Biryani, five chicken Biryanis were ordered.

Seems like chicken Biryani, not Dalgona coffee, is the number one trending dish of 2020!

Eat From Home!
2020 was the year when the dining tables did double duty - they acted as workstations from 9 am to 5 pm, and, well, dining tables for the rest of the day.

With a majority of India’s workforce working from home, Swiggy found that the number of orders placed at ‘Home’ addresses were nine times that of those placed at ‘Work’ addresses.
Pani-puris for the win!
Pani-puris for the win!

Away from their office for months, Indians couldn’t help but miss the office coffee and the masala chai from the local tea seller. To beat the post-lunch slump, several Indians ordered varieties of tea and coffee.

Meanwhile, dishes like Paneer Butter Masala, Masala Dosa, Chicken Fried Rice and Mutton Biryani continued to be India’s favourite pick-me-up dishes.

Pani-puris for the win!
What did Indians miss the most in 2020? Not friends, colleagues, but pani-puri. Swiggy ensured there was no social distancing from this most missed ‘chaat’ as they delivered over 2 lakh pani-puri orders post-lockdown.

Happy to ‘meat’ you!
Not even lockdown could stop meat lovers from grilling kebabs at their home. India’s meat of choice was Chicken with over 6 lakh kgs ordered on Swiggy. Rohu and Catla (cut Bengali Style, of course) were the most popular fish orders.

What’s more? According to StatEATistics, Bengaluru emerged as the most meat-loving city. It seems like the country’s IT capital is craving for some yummy kebabs!
