2 pm to 10 pm work hours more productive than 9 to 5 shift? 3 reasons why the extra 'morning time' is the real problem, reveal experts
A 2 pm to 10 pm work shift may look like a better alternative to the traditional 9 to 5, especially for people who dislike early mornings and prefer having more time to themselves before work. A recent Reddit discussion has sparked debate over the...

That was the argument made by a Reddit user who recently said working from 2 pm to 10 pm was “way better than 9 to 5”. The post quickly attracted different opinions, with workers sharing both sides of the experience. Some said afternoon shifts gave them a quieter and more useful morning, while others said the schedule slowly made their entire day feel like it revolved around work.
Why some workers prefer the 2 pm to 10 pm shift
The original Reddit post listed some fairly practical advantages. Someone working these hours can sleep after finishing work instead of coming home from a 9 to 5 shift exhausted and unable to do anything useful in the evening. There is also the simple issue of timing. Banks, shops, gyms, clinics and other places are generally open in the morning and early afternoon, which means appointments and errands can be handled before work. Traffic can also be lighter, and gyms and grocery stores may be less crowded.
Some commenters agreed completely.
One worker who had done similar hours said the benefits were real, particularly because there was less traffic. Another person who works a 3 pm to midnight schedule said they liked being able to sleep until 9 or 10 am and still have several hours to get things done before work.
For night owls, there is an obvious appeal. A person who is naturally more alert later in the day may simply find it easier to work in the afternoon than force themselves into an early morning routine.
But the morning does not always feel like free time
The biggest criticism in the Reddit discussion was not really about productivity. It was about how those hours feel psychologically. One commenter wrote, “The time between waking up and starting work is not real time, even if it's five hours long.”
Others described spending their mornings thinking about the fact that they had to leave for work later. Instead of feeling like a proper break, the time could feel like a countdown.
That creates an interesting difference between a 2 pm to 10 pm shift and a 9 to 5. With a conventional schedule, the working day ends in the evening and the remaining hours generally belong to you. With an afternoon shift, the day starts with several hours of personal time but ends with work, which can make it harder for some people to mentally switch off.
The social life problem is harder to ignore
Then there is the fact that most people still work regular daytime schedules. One Reddit user who had worked similar hours said, “I missed out on almost all weekday socializing, including family dinners and evening events.”
Another summed up the problem by saying, “They're at work when you're free, and you're at work when they're free.”
This can become especially difficult for parents. A person may have more time for errands in the morning but little opportunity to have dinner with their children or spend a normal evening with their partner.
And this is where research gives the debate another side.
Research points to 3 reasons an evening shift may not be better
A 2022 study published in the Annals of Occupational and Environmental Medicine looked specifically at evening work, an area that researchers said had received less attention than night shifts. The study analysed 16,692 employees from the Korean Working Conditions Survey. It found that employees working evening shifts had higher odds of reporting depression and anxiety than those who did not work such shifts. The study does not prove that working 2 pm to 10 pm causes mental health problems, but it does highlight three concerns that are worth considering.
1. Mental health: Workers who worked evening shifts showed higher levels of depression and anxiety. For those working evening shifts one to nine times a month, the adjusted odds ratio was 2.723 for depression and 3.294 for anxiety.
2. Social and family time: The researchers noted that evening work can reduce opportunities for leisure and activities with family and friends. This lines up closely with the Reddit comments about missing dinners, outings and weekday socialising.
3. Disrupted routine and leisure: Evening work can interfere with normal daily routines and make it harder to maintain hobbies and other activities. For someone who already feels that the morning is just “waiting for work”, this can make the schedule feel less freeing than it looks on paper. The researchers also pointed to the possible importance of irregular and unpredictable working hours.
The study was cross-sectional, so it cannot establish that evening work itself causes depression or anxiety. Still, it adds some weight to the concerns raised by workers who say the schedule has downsides beyond simply missing out on dinner.
So is 2 pm to 10 pm really better than 9 to 5?
For some people, it probably can be. A night owl, remote worker or someone without major evening commitments may genuinely get more out of the schedule. Quiet mornings, easier errands and less traffic are not imaginary benefits. But the Reddit discussion also shows why the same shift can feel completely different to someone else. The free morning may not feel free, evenings can disappear from social life and research has found an association between evening work and poorer mental health.
