1,986 nests, 2.29 lakh eggs, 1.91 lakh hatchlings: IFS officer shares how Tamil Nadu's Marine Elite Force is protecting an ancient journey
Tamil Nadu is celebrating World Turtle Day with remarkable conservation success. A dedicated Marine Elite Force protects nesting turtles and their eggs. This year, nearly 2000 nests were secured, leading to over 191,000 hatchlings reaching the oce...

Guardians of the night
For centuries, these ancient mariners have faithfully returned to the coastlines of Tamil Nadu to lay their eggs. Today, they are no longer alone on their perilous journeys. Under the dedicated leadership of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, an entire team works tirelessly through the night to welcome and shield them. The state has even deployed a specialized Marine Elite Force—a dedicated unit solely tasked with safeguarding these prehistoric travelers from poachers and predators, ensuring their ancient nesting rituals can continue undisturbed.
The impact of this fierce commitment is evident in the remarkable conservation milestones achieved this season. Environmental guardians successfully located and protected a staggering 1,986 nests along the coastline. From these nesting sites, a total of 2,29,668 eggs were carefully conserved in hatcheries. The ultimate reward of these sleepless nights came when 1,91,615 fragile baby turtles successfully broke through their shells and scrambled safely into the welcoming waves of the ocean.
Tech and trawlers
Beyond local beach patrols, the conservation strategy has embraced cutting-edge technology to understand the mysteries of the deep sea. Ten adult turtles were successfully tagged with advanced satellite transmitters. These devices are currently transmitting real-time data, revealing the remarkable and previously hidden oceanic migratory paths of these creatures. Additionally, to tackle the threat of commercial fishing, nearly 2,600 Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) have been integrated into fishing nets. This single intervention has drastically reduced accidental drownings, contributing to an impressive 50% drop in overall turtle mortality.
