16-year-old girl from Jhansi designed an air conditioner using just Rs 1800. It can reduce room temperature by 4-5 degrees in an hour, generates no electricity bills

An air conditioner is something the poor cannot even dare to dream about. However, one youngster from Jhansi showed that those who are struggling financially or have little to no money can also afford an AC. As per YourStory report, Kalyani Shrivastava, a 16-year-old from Jhansi, built an air conditioner for just Rs 1,800. Named ‘Desi AC’, the air conditioner has an icebox made of thermocol where the air is released from a 12-volt DC fan. Cool air is then released from the elbow, which results in a drop in the temperature by 4-5 degrees if the AC had been used for an hour.

The AC is eco-friendly, as it eliminates the emission of CFCs into the ozone layer.

The Indian Institute of Delhi (IIT-D) has chosen Kalyani's AC for the National Level Model Competition. She was awarded as part of the "Naari Samman" project, which was started by the Uttar Pradesh government in collaboration with the Hindi newspaper Amar Ujala.


She is not only an excellent scientist but also a talented vocalist. She advanced to the third round of the TV reality series Indian Idol. In contests in Lucknow, Agra, and Kanpur, she has received over fifty trophies.

The impoverished people are relieved by this inexpensive air conditioner. The AC won't result in skyrocketing electricity costs because it runs on solar energy.

In an interview with Paisa Wapas, Kalyani opened up on her innovation. “For the people of Bundelkhand, it is not possible that everyone can afford an AC, and the heat is unbearable, so I got this idea and transformed it into a reality which is being appreciated a lot. The scientists of Japan have invited me to attend the seminar after looking at my project, and it was also considered by IIT-Delhi for the National Level Competition,” she told the magazine.

She also thanked her parents and teachers for her project.
