14 bn WhatsApp messages were shared across India on New Year's Eve

NEW DELHI: Messaging app Whats App has stated Indian users sent 14 billion messages on New Year's eve, setting a new record. The previous record was for 8 billion messages sent on Diwali in a day, the company stated.

Out of 14 billion messages, 32% were GIFs, pictures, videos and voice messages, Whats App stated. The company said it has 160 million monthly active users in India. 3.1 billion messages sent were images while GIFs numbered 700 million and videos 610 million.

The company which has more than 1 billion monthly users in over 180 countries had earlier stated it was phasing out compatibility with older phones in a technology upgrade.

While initially listing out some Blackberry models and Nokia handsets, the company had later retracted its statement and had said it is extending support for Blackberry OS, Blackberry 10, Nokia S40 and Nokia Symbian 60 until June 30 2017.
