100-year-old 5,800-sq ft mansion of Oscar-winning actress, with 19 rooms, pool, was sold in 2006 for $3.5 million. It is abandoned now

A mansion of an Oscar-winning actress, Liza Minnelli, daughter of Hollywood icon Judy Garland, is currently abandoned as per reports. A two-year legal drama between the star and her ageing stepmother sealed the fate of this magnificent house. As per a Business Insider report, the mansion was built in 1925 and was remodelled by architect John Elgin Woolf before it was purchased by iconic Hollywood director Vincente Minnelli. While the Father of the Bride director, who passed away in 1986, put his daughter in charge of the 5,800-square-foot house in Beverly Hills, he stipulated in his will that her stepmother, his fourth wife, Lee, would live in the house till her death.

The Legal Drama That Started It All

According to a Curbed Los Angeles report, in 2000, the New York, New York, star decided to sell the house. She offered Lee a condo to live in, but she refused.

Lee refused to leave when it sold in 2002. According to the Los Angeles Times, Liza then stopped paying the employees' electricity bills, even though they were still working for free. Liza was sued by Lee on charges of emotional anguish, elder abuse, and breach of contract. In order to obtain new accommodation, she also requested a $1 million trust in her name from the sale of the house.


After the case was dropped in 2002, Liza reached a deal with the new purchasers and paid them rent so Lee could remain in the property until her passing.

As per the Los Angeles Times report, Liza sold the house in 2006. Her real estate agent, Sheila Rose, revealed that Lee would continue to stay at the home, and the new owners have delayed renovation plans. "She still lives there," Rose told the Los Angeles Times. "Liza inherited the house with Lee, now 98, in it." Business Insider revealed Liza even paid the new owners' rent.

The house, which has 19 rooms, a pool and a motor court, was sold for $3.5 million.

After Lee passed away in 2009, the new owners apparently discussed whether to renovate or demolish the house, but it appears that no decision was ever made, and it is currently abandoned, as per reports by Business Insider and Real Estate.com.

It is never advisable to ignore the last wishes of those who are near and dear to us and no longer in this world. Neglecting the directive of a dying parent can cause us much trouble and ruin.
