1. Regular servicing

Most car fires are caused by short-circuits. Due to the heat, wires melt and snap. Service your car regularly and from an authorized centre.

2. Check essentials before ignition

A fire can be caused by a loose oil lid, a leaking fuel pipe or even a spark from an over-heated battery. Check all systems before turning on the key.

3. Keep a fire extinguisher

Always keep a fire extinguisher at your arms reach and use it in case of a fire. Even if you are able to douse the flames, do not try to drive the vehicle. Inform the fire department.

4. No smoking

Embers from un-stubbed cigarettes can light up a piece of upholstery. If you feel like having a smoke, pull over and get out of the vehicle.

5. Don't stress your car

Avoid installing fancy lights, sound systems and other electronic systems in your car. These increase load on batteries and lead to short-circuits.

7.Use right cellphone charger

Car mobile chargers sold by vendors is a major cause of fires. Most of them do not meet the safety standards. If they are left plugged into the socket, it might lead to a short-circuit.

8. Don't leave sprays behind

Aerosol canisters tend to explode with extreme heat. Avoid leaving a body spray inside your cash dashboard or even the boot especially, during summer.

9. Don't open bonnet

If there is fire under the bonnet, release the safety hatch but do not try to open the lid. This will allow more air and make the fire grow bigger.

10. Don't bother about belongings

Most casualties in car fires are caused as occupants try to collect their belongings before abandoning vehicle. Take whatever you can and get out of the vehicle.
