Tech still tempts despite new options

PUNE: When it comes to the manufacturing sector, youngsters just dont want to hitch their wagon despite a 5-year boom that has generated a sense of buoyancy in the sector. For young students and professionals, even today, IT still remains the career choice.

These are the findings of a survey, Career choices of Management and Engineering Students and Professionals in IT companies, conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), western region, and Forbes Marshall. The survey was conducted among seven engineering, eight management institutes and seven IT companies, which covered 436 students.

We had conducted a similar study in 2001 when Indian manufacturing was living under the shadow of the IT boom. Though we expected the outcome of the 2008 study to be far different from the findings of our first study, in reality, we found that little has actually changed, said Naushad Forbes, deputy chairman, CII, WR, and director, Forbes Marshall.

The top five job pulls for students in order of priority are opportunities for career growth, learning opportunities for professional growth, work environment, opportunities for creativity and innovation and compensation package.
