The first rule is to know whether your boss is, indeed, the rising star in the company. If he/she is, do not read further and just make sure that you don't run out of the glue that binds you together.

If your boss is down and out, use the meeting with the uber boss to find out the rising star. This information can be garnered through a simple question about the role models in the company - apart from your boss.

Avoid slanders

Don't ever badmouth your boss unless you are 21. At that age, it is a sign of youthful impetuosity. But if you are slightly older, it will reek of stupid opportunism.

Be proactive

Take an active interest in the areas where you would like to work. Also show your efforts by doing extensive research work and volunteering for a special project.
