Talent crunch makes cos look off-campus
Driven by the need to spread out their huge campus hiring across the year, IT companies are adopting an off-campus recruitment strategy or what they call staggered hiring.
Director of assessment firm Merit-Trac Services Madan Padaki says, “Companies have a shortfall because many students, who had been offered jobs in the previous year, might not turn up. Another reason for companies adopting this strategy is that it helps spread out the freshers’ recruitment through the year, since the numbers have now increased.”
“For reasons of cost of search, we limit ourselves to 150 premier institutions across India. But extremely good talent also resides outside these institutions. Through this kind of hiring, we tap into the entire breadth of good talent residing across colleges in India,” said Cognizant vice-president-HR Bhaskar Das.
About 5 lakh engineers graduate each year in India of which 25-30% get placed in IT/ITeS companies. With the number of freshers being hired rising significantly, some IT companies are trying to see how they can look beyond this existing pool. “HR planners in companies now keep a larger figure in mind, taking the conversion rate of job offers into account.
