Slowdown claims 1.5 lakh job opportunities in Maharashtra
MUMBAI: Maharashtra has lost about 1.5 lakh job opportunities in the last year in the contract sector due to a slump in the market.

"Contract workers are the most affected due to a slowdown and the sector has lost about 1.5 employment opportunities," Labour Minister Nawab Malik said today.

Job opportunities had been reduced primarily in automobile sector followed by manufacturing and engineering segments, he said.

Concerned about the retrenchments in various sectors, he said "the Labour Department has written to the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan asking him to set up a committee to review the matter."

However, there were no reports of retrenchment of permanent employees, the Minister said.

As a part of measures to help workers during the ongoing slowdown, he said the Government is going to soon recruit 10,000 security guards through the State Security Board.

"There is need in the market for 50,000 security guards and we are going to train 10,000 in the first phase," he said.
