DUBAI: Indian workers in Saudi Arabia may be adversely affected with the Kingdom proposing a law that would limited jobs in commercial establishments to Saudi nationals, a report has said.

The Kingdom's Shoura Council has sought the approval of the Cabinet for a proposed law to limit employment in commercial establishments, retail and wholesale shops, distribution companies and among street vendors to Saudi nationals.

If approved by the cabinet, the proposal would become a law within 120 days from its publication in the official gazette. It will be implemented gradually by the ministries of Labour and Municipal and Rural Affairs, the Saudi Gazette said today.

However, underlying its implementation is a clause that mandates that the law should not conflict with international conventions, it said.

The proposed law also sets hours of operation for shops in the Kingdom. It mandates that all business owners obey labour and social security regulations.

It empowers the Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs to appoint officers to monitor the implementation and report its violations.
