Infrastructure cos facing talent crunch

NEW DELHI: Indias key infrastructure sectors are currently facing an acute talent crunch. The attrition rate is as high as 40% as demand for skilled professionals in these sectors has gone up significantly, according to industry body Assocham. Huge capacity expansion plans are spurring the demand, the chamber has said.

Many sectors like energy and steel are reporting attrition at a 40% level. Since these companies are commissioning new capacities, demand for skilled manpower is going up. This, in turn, leads to high attrition levels, explained Assocham president Sajjan Jindal.

In coming years, public sector units are also expected to throw up huge job opportunities for professionals. The chamber cited the example of NTPCs likely foray into equipment manufacturing and power trading that would generate more jobs.

Moreover, work on four ultra mega power projects, with estimated capacities of 16,000 MW, is likely to commence shortly. These projects would alone require close to 4,000 fitters and welders for cooling towers and ash handling plant. In addition, according to the chambers assessment, the sector would require more than 8,000 skilled professionals in the first year of work itself.

The petroleum sector, Assocham said, would witness capacity additions due to crude oil shortage. Which explains its requirement of a large number of petroleum engineers, drillers, physicians, and geologists, besides executives.
