India to set up panel to help its nationals find Gulf jobs

The Indian Cabinet has approved the establishment of the Council for Overseas Employment Promotion, Ravi, who was on a two-day visit to Bahrain, told a press conference in Manama yesterday.
"We shall soon appoint members to the Council," he said. "The members, in consultation with the respective Indian embassies, will study the living conditions of workers in the Gulf. They will also study the future employment opportunities for trained Indian manpower in the Gulf."
Ravi said his ministry was allocating funds to state governments to help job seekers upgrade their skills.
"The Council will advise vocational training centres in India on the types of courses which are in demand in the Gulf," he said.
Nearly five million Indians work in the Gulf region and provide USD five billion of remittances to the country every year.
The minister also warned that with India registering a GDP growth of nine per cent, only those companies in the Gulf which offer very high salaries and enhanced work conditions will get qualified personnel from India. "My ministry's mission is to ensure a legal, regular and transparent flow of Indian workforce to the Gulf."
