India will collaborate with G20 nations to arrive at a consensus on several issues around the gig and platform workers, including a methodology to calculate work experience, ethical concerns, equality and safety of such workers besides social security for them.

This is imperative as the countries deliberate on mobility of gig and platform workers between nations along with other skilled workforce.

A senior government official told ET that even the issue of sustainable financing of the social security for gig and platform workers could come up for discussion at G20.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has fuelled the gig and platform economy across nations, including India. Hence, it is imperative that a global consensus is evolved for supporting the gig and platform economy,” a senior government official told ET.

India took over the G20 presidency on December 1. It is expected to hold multiple meetings at the working group level and at the ministerial level.

Depending on the extent of consensus built upon critical issues related to platform workers, the matter could figure at the leaders’ summit in September 2023.
