IIM Calcutta sees 34% surge in pre-placement offers so far

MUMBAI: IIM Calcutta has received 78 offers as of the first week of August, representing a 34% increase over the 58 offers in the corresponding period last year. Already this year, the 454-strong batch of 2013-15 has 58 PPOs and 20 PPIs (pre-placement interviews) in hand.

Once again, the management consulting space has led the charge with the top four consulting firms: McKinsey & Co, BCG, Bain & Co and A T Kearney giving 24 offers. McKinsey & Co and The Boston Consulting Group gave the maximum number of offers in this domain with 8 and 7 respectively while 100% of the students who interned with A.T.Kearney bagged PPOs.

In the general management domain, offers came from Tata Administrative Services (TAS) and the Aditya Birla Group. Philips gave 3 PPOs and 2 PPIs; Pepsi gave 3 offers across its sales & marketing and finance divisions and Alshaya, a top retail franchise operator in the Middle East gave 8 PPOs. Bosch, Nestle, Shell, Vodafone and iNautix were among the other companies who gave PPOs. From the finance sector, Deutsche Bank was the first bank to roll out a PPO.

PPOs apart, pre-placement interview offers came from the likes of Mondelez, KPMG, L’Oreal, Medtronics and HCL. “Companies seem to be realising the importance of summer internship program and are hiring more through the PPO route. The current figures show an improvement in the economic situation as well as the profiles of the students at IIM Calcutta,” said Rajiv Kumar, placement chairperson of IIMC in a release.

Last year IIM Calcutta students received 112 PPOs in total by the end of the year. The institute is expecting that number to be surpassed this year.
