Play your Role

Rahul Narayan (name changed) worked with IT firm Infosys and resigned in mid-2011 to join another technology firm. But till his last day, he worked like a regular employee, keeping his boss posted at all times.

Seal your Lips

Exiting employees often talk ill about the former employer. Word gets around, and smudges their profile. Singing the new firm’s praises is also best avoided.

Negotiate in Limits

Companies often promise an increase in compensation and better roles, and employees use these to renegotiate their deal with the new firm. It is fine to get the best opportunity but be good corporate citizens, says Anandorup Ghosh, practice head for executive compensation and corporate governance at Aon Hewitt.

Keep Good Relations

On the last day, one should send a personal mail to the manager and colleagues. You never know when you will cross paths again.

Stick to Agreements

At the exit interview, mention how it will be a pleasure to work with the company again. If the new job is with a competitor, follow no-poaching and non-disclosure agreements.
