IIT Bombay has become the top choice for aspiring engineers in 2024, with 72 of the top 100 JEE (Advanced) rankers opting for the institute. The computer science program remains particularly popular. The trend highlights IIT Bombay's strong appeal...

A staggering 72 of the top 100 rankers have joined the IIT Bombay campus, while IIT Delhi attracted 23, and IIT Madras drew in two of the top 100. Notably, all of the top 10 rankers chose to pursue computer science at IIT Bombay, reinforcing its status as a leading destination for engineering talent in India.
Influx to IIT Bombay
The demand for IIT Bombay is not new. Of the first 25 rankers, 24 opted for IIT Bombay, and the trend continued with 47 of the top 50 students choosing this institution. This influx showcases the institution's strong appeal among the brightest minds in the country.
IIT Bombay's computer science department has long been a magnet for top-ranking students. Admission data from JEE (Advanced) 2024 indicates that computer science at IIT Bombay was a top choice for nearly half of the qualified candidates. Out of the top 500 rankers, 179 chose IIT Bombay, followed by 109 opting for IIT Delhi, and 69 selecting IIT Madras.
IIT Bombay Director, Prof. Shireesh Kedare, expressed pride in the institute’s continued appeal among top rankers. "I am proud that IIT Bombay remains the preferred destination for most of the top rankers in the JEE (Advanced) examination," he told TOI. He also congratulated the incoming students for choosing a path aligned with their aspirations and goals.
The preference for IIT Bombay among top rankers marks a significant shift from past trends. Approximately 30 years ago, IIT Kharagpur was the most sought-after institution among engineering aspirants. However, this year, it did not receive any students from the top 100 ranks.
IIT Kanpur, once hailed as a top destination and offering "demi-god treatment" to its entrants, has also seen a shift in preference. Vishal Misra, an IIT Bombay alumnus and Vice Dean of Computing and AI at Columbia Engineering, recalled, "During my time, I think Kanpur used to be the most sought-after IIT. The top rankers used to go to IIT Kanpur." He attributes IIT Bombay's current popularity to its vibrant campus environment and strong networking opportunities. Misra noted a change in the mindset of students who now focus on entrepreneurship and innovation within India rather than seeking opportunities abroad.
Several experts believe that the trend towards IIT Bombay is also peer-driven. Misra suggested, "If everybody's going to IIT Bombay every year, then, you know, next year also people want to go to IIT Bombay." The campus's location in Mumbai, with its dynamic environment, adds to its allure.
