JAIPUR: IT networking company Cisco Systems (India) is planning to double its headcount by 2012. Cisco Systems South Asia regional manager for corporate responsibility Lokesh Mehra told ET that the company would hire around 5000 people to take the headcount to 10,000 by 2012.

“At present we have around 5000 professionals including R&D, sales and business support staff. We have presence in over 100 cities with sales offices in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata and Hyderabad. As our business is growing, we would require skilled manpower to fuel the growth,” he said.

The company is focusing on verticals including government and defence, BFSI, health care and manufacturing. “There are 22 verticals. We find these to be high growth verticals. We are working closely with central and state governments including providing interconnecting to the outposts guarding the border. We have also signed MoU with Indian Airforce for enhancing security using IT network,” he said.

Mr. Mehra said that there is a shortage of 5 lakh IT professionals including 1.34 lakh network engineers in the country. “A lot of initiatives are being taken in the field of cyber crime, egovernance, defence and BFSI sectors. The country needs skilled manpower to carry out these initiatives. We feel that the demand and supply gap can widen further posing serious concerns for the growth,” he said.
