DOHA: A temporary ban imposed by the Indian government on recruitment of Indian maids under the age of 30 to Qatar is still in effect, but the two governments are discussing its possible withdrawal.
The discussion regarding withdrawal of the ban is progressing in view of the recent labour protocol between the two nations, Indian ambassador to Qatar George Joseph said at the embassy's monthly open forum yesterday.
The pact will benefit the Indian expates, Joseph said.
According to the pact, if a worker was terminated from his service for no fault of his, the sponsor is entitled to pay the salary for the whole period of contract, he said.
Indian government had banned the recruitment of maids to ECR countries (Emigration clearance) under the age of 30 in May this year to nip the possibility of sexual exploitation.
The ambassador also informed that a total of 137 Indians have been sent to deportation centre till November 22, of them 78 are males and 48 expatriate labourers were sent to the Centre during the month of November.
The Indian Community Benevolent Fund (ICBF) provided free air tickets to 15 compatriots.
Two workers at the meeting sought the embassy's intervention to force their sponsor to clear their pending salary for six months.
They told the mission that 18 Indian workers, including them, were denied salaries for the last six months and they are at the mercy of ICBF for several months.
