16 Indian workers in Bahrain seek dues from employer

DUBAI: Sixteen Indian labourers, who had lodged a complaint against a contracting company for allegedly not paying their dues, are likely to get their money after the intervention of the Indian embassy.

The workers, hailing from Tamil Nadu, went to the embassy on October 31 to complain against a company which owed them BD 2,500 (around Rs 2,59,000) for overtime.

They also said they had been promised good jobs on their arrival in Bahrain, but had ended up labouring for various companies, some of which had failed to pay them.

Embassy officials took up their case and the company has reportedly agreed to hand over the cash at the embassy today, Gulf Daily News said.

Ten of the workers have received outpasses from the embassy and are waiting for their money to leave the country, under the general amnesty for illegal workers and residents.

Workers' spokesman Jaya Murugan said they had discussed the matter with social workers, who advised them to go to the Indian embassy. "The embassy official told us the manager would be coming with the money," he said.

An embassy official confirmed that the company had agreed to pay.
