West Bengal, APEDA tie up for cargo complex

The West Bengal government on Monday tied up with Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) to set up a perishable agro products export cargo complex at Haldia seaport.

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government on Monday tied up with Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) to set up a perishable agro products export cargo complex at Haldia seaport to facilitate fresh and processed food products.

West Bengal Food Processing Industries and Horticulture Department signed an MoU with central agency APEDA to set up the complex soon.

The project would act as a part of the cold chain for export of perishable agro products mainly fruits and vegetables and also processed foods and allied items, APEDA Chairman K S Money said after signing the MoU.

The project would be commissioned in 12 months and would cost APEDA an investment of about Rs 5.51 crore.

Commodities that would be exported from the complex would include potato, litchi, mango and frozen seafood.

The complex would have facilities like truck docking area, receiving area with weighing system and cold rooms for temporary storage of perishables.

It would also include a 500 MT capacity chamber for handling potato, two 50 MT capacity chambers for holding mango and litchi and two 50 MT capacity chambers for storing frozen seafood.

Land for the project would be given by the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) authority
