VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has initiated a series of mechanised coal handling programmes, a top official said here today.

Talking to reporters today, VPT Chairman Ajeya Kallam said that with the commissioning of the Rs 444.1 crore mechanised coal handling facility of Vedanta Resources at VPT, the outer harbour would be totally clean and prevent vehicular movement which spreads coal particle pollution.

He said that after modernisation VPT would be able to handle an additional 50 million tonnes of cargo per annum.

Mechanisation of the new facility would ensure highest discharge rate, reduced pre-berthing delay and reduction in operational cost, he said.
