Two Mumbai road projects gets aid under NURM
The central government has sanctioned financial aid for two key projects - the Eastern Freeway and the Sahar Elevated Road - under the Jawahar Lal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM).
Both projects will be executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). “These are key components of the Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project and will play a significant role in easing traffic congestion on city roads,” said the MMRDA spokesperson. The projects were cleared in a meeting between MMRDA and the Planning Commission last week, said the official.
“We will soon invite tenders and take the project ahead,” said the official. This is the third core sector scheme to get aid from the centre after the Rs 1,200-crore Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drain (BRIMSTOWAD) project and the Rs 1,400-crore Middle Vaitarna Water supply project.
The Eastern Freeway is the eastern-most north south corridor, a 22-km long stretch, out of which a 10.5-km section has been sanctioned. Out of the 10.5 km, 7 km will be an elevated road. On the other hand, the Sahar elevated road will be a 4 km stretch creating a direct connectivity between Western Express Highway and Sahar International Airport.
“Both these projects will facilitate in building an uninterrupted airport connectivity,” said Sanjay Ubale, secretary, special projects, government of Maharashtra.
