Tuticorin port crosses 12 mn tonne mark in cargo handling
Tuticorin Port has crossed the 12 million tonnes mark on November 9 handling 120.33 lakh tonnes of cargo upto November 8.
During the current year upto Nov 8, 2,65,317 TEUs of containers have been handled.
When compared to the container traffic handled during the corresponding period of the previous year, the traffic handled upto November 8,represents 20.54 per cent growth.
In container traffic, Tuticorin Port is poised to achieve five million TEUs-mark by the end of financial year 2007-08.
There are 10 container freight stations in the vicinity the release by A Subbiah, Deputy Chairman, Tuticorin Port Trust, said, adding three more container frieght stations are in the offing.
One more Container Terminal is to be commenced in the Port soon.
"The present draught available in the Port of 10.7 and 10.9 metres is also going to be improved to 12.8 metres under National Maritime Development Programme," it said adding necessary clearance from the Government is awaited.
