MADURAI: Tamil Nadu Transport Corporations continued to suffer losses and currently it stood at rs 1000 crore though its revenue had increased by Rs.830 crore in the last two years,Transport Minister K N Nehru said today.

Inaugurating the Regional Transport Office (North) Building here, he said "five divisions of the corporation have reached breakeven while two divisions suffered very heavy loss. The transport corporations still suffer a loss of Rs 1000 crore."

The corporations revenue increased by introducing buses in 1500 new routes and extending 2100 bus routes in a scientific manner, which enabled transporting 15 lakh more passengers, he said.

The Government had acquired 6500 new buses last year and this year 3500 Buses would be introduced. More than 2000 buses which were not roadworthy, had been repaired and made road worthy and now the Corporations operated 20000 buses, he said.

Arrears due to transport workers including leave encashment and retirement benefits would be settled. The Madurai Division, with 4000 buses, was the biggest division next to Chennai and it would get 1000 new buses by September.

He regretted that the Government transport corporation crew did not even care to maintain the buses unlike the private bus crew in Tiruchirappalli who maintain the buses well.It was this attitude that forced the corporation to handover AC buses for maintenance to private hands at Rs 100 per fortnight per bus, he said.
