NEW DELHI: As many as 1281 railway staffers have been found responsible for unwarranted detention of trains across the country between January and July this year and action was being initiated against them, Government told Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Round-the-clock monitoring of trains, launching of punctuality drives, running of trains at maximum permissible speed and upgradation of technology of track, rolling stock and signaling were among other steps being taken to prevent late running of trains, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said during Question Hour.

He said various steps were being taken to reduce congestion on railway tracks including laying of a third line in certain areas for faster movement of traffic.

Asked about the time-frame for action to be taken against 1281 staffers, Minister of State for Railways R Velu said it involved a "long drawn" process of disciplinary inquiry which may last upto a year.

On eve-teasing in compartments reserved for women in trains, he said women personnel of Railway Protection Force were carrying out surprise checks besides personnel from the force escorting trains.

Efforts were also being made to ensure additional deployment of women personnel for the purpose, Velu said.
