Salem Railway division to be inaugurated on Sep 14
The Salem railway division in Tamil Nadu will be inaugurated on September 14, state Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said here on Thursday.
Karunanidhi told reporters that Minister of State for Railways R Velu, who met him today, confirmed the date of inauguration of the new division.
A function would be organised in Salem on that day and he would be attending it, he said. Kerala objected to the creation of a new division by bifurcating the Palakkad division.
It argued that the creation of the Salem division would weaken the existing Palakkad division based in Kerala.
Separate delegations of MPs from Tamil Nadu had earlier urged the Centre to speed up formation of the new division.
Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh also called on the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on Thursday. Karunanidhi said Singh would be attending the first meeting of the Tamil Classical Language Committee at Chennai on August 18 during which matters related to two awards named after Tamil poets Tholkappiyar and Thiruvalluvar would be discussed.
