Railways to penalise erring food contractors
Concerned over "unhygenic and poor quality" of food being served in trains, Railways has decided to penalise erring contractors with heavy fines and even cancellation of contracts.
"After ascertaining complaints by people on poor services and quality of foods served in trains, heavy fines on several contractors have been imposed. Some contracts have also been terminated and similar process is on for others against whom complaints were received," P K Goel, Executive Director, Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation told PTI here today.
Goel was responding to a question as to what step the IRCTC, which is responsible for providing clean, good food at affordable prices, was doing on complaints by passengers on the issue.
He said that IRCTC is launching Computer based 'Complaint Handling Mechanism' to immediately address the grievances raised by train passengers by initiating action against the contractor involved.
"We are introducing computer-based complaint handling mechanism to immediately address such grievances by the passenger," Goel said.
Under the computerised mechanism, the complaints would be re-routed through e-mail to the specific complaint Centres in each Zonal Railways for immediate action, he said.
