KOCHI: In the backdrop of the Dubai Ports (DP) World expressing concern at the frequent strikes on the Kochi port, the Regional Labour commissioner has convened a meeting of various union leaders, port officials and DP World authorities on Monday, port sources said.

One of the largest marine terminal operators in the world, DP World had pointed that the frequent strikes affects operations in the existing Rajiv Gandhi container terminal here and expressed fears that this may delay the commencement of construction work of the Rs 1,200 crore Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT).

In a letter to the Cochin Port Trust (CPT) Chairman, N Ramachandran, DP World Indian Sub-continent Managing Director Ganesh Raj had expressed fears about the viability of the ICTT.

In the last twenty months, there were about 14 strikes which affected the operation at the Rajiv Gandhi Terminal, he said.

The DP world is also concerned with the other strikes called by various organisations and political parties, as it affects the movement of goods to and from the port area.

Ramachandran had apprised Chief Minister V S Achutanandan about the issue and it has also been brought to the notice of state finance and labour ministers, the sources said.
