NEW DELHI: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad has said that privatisation in railways would only be restricted to running container trains, construction of dedicated freight corridor, modernisation of railway stations and establishment of logistic parks and warehouses.
The core activities like passenger and freight services would always remain in the railways��� ambit. Announcing an investment of over Rs 3,00,000 crore in the next five years for modernisation programme in the railways, he said, ���I am against indiscriminate privatisation of railways. Under my leadership, railway would not be handed over to private players. But this does not mean that I am against PPP.���
Finance minister P Chidambaram too endorsed Mr Prasad's view that railways should retain its core activities. ���Core activities in crucial infrastructure area like Railway could remain with the public sector,��� he said, while suggesting that private sector could be roped in for allied activities.
The railways��� surplus is expected to touch Rs 20,000 crore this fiscal as against last year���s Rs 13,000 crore.
