NHAI goes hi-tech with WAN rollout

This would enable NHAI to monitor data on toll collection, construction, maintenance and financial management across the country.

NEW DELHI: PROGRESS on national highways and toll collection information will now be available to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at the click of a button. NHAI has started a national programme to connect 27,000 km of national highways through wide area network (WAN) technology. This would enable NHAI to monitor data on toll collection, construction, maintenance and financial management across the country.

“At present, WAN deployment has been successfully completed at 104 locations out of 128 locations identified. The technology reduces time taken to collect data, thereby speeding up the pace of decision making. Sitting in Delhi, we can monitor progress in farflung areas. Video-conference facilities have been provided at 10 locations of the Golden Quadrilateral and eight locations on the North-South corridor,” NHAI (IT division) chief general manager Atul Kumar said.
NHAI has also begun the process of implementing WAN on 26 toll plaza stretches. The technology, which has been provided by US-based Cisco Systems, will be used for the first time in the world for the purpose of toll monitoring. The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 21.33 crore and is expected to go up as more stretches are brought into the project.
