New panel to look at Mumbai Port land
The government has constituted an 11-member committee comprising members from both centre and state "to sort out various issues of Mumbai port vis-à-vis development of Mumbai city" .
The 11-member panel would have six representatives of the central government and the port - secretary, ministry of shipping (as its convenor); chairperson and deputy chairperson of Mumbai Port (as members), chief operations manager, central railway (member); joint secretary (ports) and chief engineer, Mumbai Port (member-secretary ).
The state is represented by five officials - the chief secretary; additional chief secretary, urban development; principal secretary (transport and excise ), home department; municipal commissioner of Mumbai and metropolitan commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), who are all members .
With such a gathering, the meeting on the contentious issue of land belonging to Mumbai Port is expected generate some heat as both the port and the state government have different views on the issue. The new committee supersedes an earlier panel constituted by the state.
