N F railway records 21% growth for '05-06

GUWAHATI: The country's smallest railway, the North-east Frontier railway, has recorded an outstanding revenue growth of 21 per cent and a passenger growth of 26 per cent in 2005-06 fiscal, which is the highest among railway zones in the country.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the N F railway general manager A K Sanwalka said the railways achieved a record growth of 26 per cent in the number of passengers and earned revenue that is 21 per cent higher than the earnings in the 2004-05 fiscal.
Although it is one of the most loss-making railways, the N F railway had managed to cut down its loss by 13 per cent, the general manager said.
He said the railways have sanctioned a Rs 22 crore package in the first phase for building a second terminal station at Kamakhya which would reduce congestion in the existing terminal station of Guwahati.
Besides, a Rs 28 crore project is underway to improve the facilities at the Guwahati railway station, Sanwalka said.
Sanwalka announced the upgradations of three trains, the Guwahati-Ernakulam, Guwahati-Bangalore and Guwahati- Secunderabad to the superfast category from July 1 next.
