Minimum bus fare in Mumbai reduced

MUMBAI: Over 45 per cent of the total passengers of the BEST-run buses, who travel on shorter distances, will benefit as the civic authorities have lowered the minimum fare by Re one to Rs three.

In a step towards the rationalisation of fares, the General Body of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) today passed a proposal to lower the fares on shorter routes while the same for the loner routes will be increased.

Fares on longer routes have been increased by a minimum of 0.50 rupees to Rs six.

"This (fare) restructuring is being done to prevent our short distance passengers from opting for autorickshaws," said Sanjay Potnis, Chairman, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), the body operating the bus service in the metropolis.

The Regional Transport Authority will take around four days time to clear the proposal after which the new rates will be implemented, Potnis added.

Majority of people use suburban trains to travel to work place but they use BEST buses, numbering over 3,500, to reach the nearest railway station from their residence or to their office from the railway stations.
