KopT posts 60% rise net profit for '05-06
The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) reported a net profit of around Rs 300 crore in 2005-06, even as the Kolkata Dock System registered profits for the first time since its inception.
"We have achieved around 60 per cent rise in net profit of around Rs 300 crore over the previous year's Rs 184.57 crore," KoPT chairman A K Chanda told media.
"Also, the Kolkata Dock System has registered profit for the first time," he said without giving figures.
The spurt in profit was achieved despite marginal rise in turnover to around Rs 1,100 crore in 2005-06. The port is yet to announce its financial result officially.
During the previous year, the total revenue was Rs 1,006 crore. Total cargo handled by KoPT was 53 million tonnes, the second port in India after Visakhapatnam, during 2005-06.
Kopt's other dock, the Haldia Dock System handled 42 million tonnes of cargo during the period under review, against 36 million tonnes handled last year.
Kolkata Dock System handled 10 per cent higher cargo in 2005-06 against 9.95 million tonnes handled the year before.
Speaking about the two proposed jetties at Diamond Harbour, Chanda said Consulting Engineering Services (CES) was nearing completion of the feasibility study.
"Location will be finalised and construction would start soon after the study was submitted by the consultant," Chanda said.
The total project cost for the jetty was estimated at Rs 200 crore.
