Kolkata port 2nd highest cargo handler in country
The Kolkata Port annexed the second spot among the major ports in the country in handling of cargo in the last fiscal year.
The port handled 53 million tonnes of cargo and the first spot was secured by the Visakhapatnam port, KoPT Chairman Anupkumar Chand has said.
The port authorities were planning to build a a sea and its feasibility report was awaited. Once the report was available the proposed site could be decided.
He said the KoPT authorities submitted a draft proposal to the Public Investment Board of Union government for navigational work of the balari channel at Haldia for smooth passage of the ships and other vessels.
He said two jetties would be built on river Hooghly in Diamond Harbour and work would commence once the feasibility report was made avialable. The construction would incur a cost of Rs 200 crore.
About Haldia, Chanda said work was on to build two berths at a cost of Rs 100 crore.
Earlier a three-member delegation from Rotterdam port in Holland, were on a visit to Kolkata and Haldia ports since June five.
The Rotterdam port has been adjudged by the Centre as the Advisor of consultants of 12 major ports in the country to enhance their capacity and core competence and the visit was part of that arrangement.
