Kerala Lorry owners to stop services from Oct 19

The Kerala State Lorry Owners' Federation calls upon the federation to stop their services indefinitely from October 19.

KOCHI: Protesting against the "non-cooperative attitude" of the government to its demand, the Kerala State Lorry Owners' Federation, has called upon the federation to stop their services indefinitely from October 19.

Speaking to reporters here today, P M Mohammed Ali, President and A Jayaprakash, Secretary, Kerala State Lorry Owners' Federation, said they were protesting against the government's move not to accept vehicle taxes till the owners pay the arrears of employees welfare fund for 30 months.

Pointing out that the lorry owners were not against implementing the employee welfare fund, he said the previous UDF government had given assurance of fixing Rs 200 per month for each lorry as owner's share for remitting into the employees welfare fund.

However, when the original Act was amended, instead of Rs 200 per lorry it was changed to Rs 200 per employee, thus making Rs 400 for a lorry, he said adding the federation had given representation to the UDF government in the connection.

The UDF government had also given time for the owners to remit the employee welfare fund share till the end of the year, he said.

He urged the LDF government to fix Rs 200 as the welfare fund share, since the lorry owners were already in dire straits.
