KOLKATA: Kolkata Dock System (KDS) handled a record 34,287 TEUs of container traffic in July 2009. This is the largest quntum of container shipments handled in a single month at the Kolkata docks, eclipsing the previous high of 33,219 TEUs in June, 2009.

Significantly, during April-July, 2009, KDS handled an all time high container traffic of 1,24,886 TEUs against 1,02,723 TEUs in April-July, 2008 -- a 21.57% growth over the corresponding period last year. In 2008-09 KDS handled 3,02,169 TEUs.

The improvement of containerisation at KDS has been possible due to multi-dimensional measures taken recently for improving operational efficiency of the container terminal at KDS including induction of state-of-the-art handling equipment, adoption of good operating practices and benchmarking certain productive services against international standards which are showing results.

Besides increasing customer focus coupled with various cost-saving measures for the port users have helped in a major way to achieve the growth in container traffic through KDS.
