AHMEDABAD: About 200 freight forwarders in Gujarat are up in arms against shipping firms. They have accused these companies, particularly operating at Gujarat’s private ports, of according higher priority to cargo collected from other states.
These freight forwarders are now in the process of forming an association to fight the inordinate delay. “It not only tarnishes the image of freight forwarders and exporters and in turn affects business,” says Hiten Vasant, executive committee member of All India Motor Transport Congress.
The freight forwarders believe that in spite of so much activity at Gujarat ports, the state-based importers and exporters are not able to take the full advantage.
“Shipping lines have been booking cargo more than they can handle. As a result exporters suffer,” says Dhiren Raged, a Gandhidham-based leading freight forwarder. Freight forwarders are planning to launch an association to protest against the discriminatory attitude of shipping lines.
According to Devendra Thakkar, president of Customs House Agents Association, cargo handled by Concor sails smoothly as the bookings were accepted well in advance. Deepak Kapoor, chief manager, Concor, ICD, Sabarmati, Ahmedabad said he was not aware of any such case ‘at least with Concor’.
