The government on Thursday approved development of harbour wall berths at Mumbai Port at a cost of Rs 353 crore.

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday approved development of harbour wall berths at Mumbai Port at a cost of Rs 353 crore.

"The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today gave its approval for development of Harbour Wall Berths (18-22 at Indira Dock), at an estimated cost of Rs 353 crore, by Mumbai Port Trust through its internal resources," Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters here.

The project, which is expected to be completed by February 2010, includes construction of deepening of berth pocket and navigational channel, strengthening of the existing berths and providing six electrical level luffing (ELL) wharf cranes and other cargo handling equipments.

The development and expansion project would enable Mumbai Port in handling larger, deeper and wider vessels. The capacity of the harbour wall berths after development would go up to 8 million tonnes per annum.
