NEW DELHI: With most of the sunrise sectors such as retail, telecom and electronics growing at fast pace in the country, logistics industry is set to take off sooner than later.

The organised logistics sector is currently only 6% of the total logistics industry and is growing at 12-15% annually. Organised retail, which is growing at an annual rate of 20%, is expected to give a major boost to logistics. The retailers may outsource their logistics work to other players as it would help the company focus on their core business.

At present, the logistics cost add 14% to the overall cost of goods in the country.

The players have demanded for industry status to logistics sector. They expect that the move could bring down the cost of providing logistics services.

In a bid to give a push to the sector, the Economic Times has organised a seminar ELICIT 2009 on supply chain and logistics on Thursday. The seminar would focus on logistics sector as emerging industry and highlight latest trends and developments in this sector. It will discuss the issues and challenges and find ways to address them.
